S’well and Parley for the Oceans Join Forces to Fight Single-Use Plastics

Saturday, June 8th, 2019

Did you know, in the next minute, a million plastic bottles will be purchased around the world? This means that by 2020 over half a trillion plastic bottles are expected to be sold. What’s more alarming? 91% of the plastic we produce never gets recycled, and 8 million metric tons of plastic enter into the ocean annually. According to National Geographic, this is equivalent to five grocery bags of plastic trash piled up on every foot of coastline on the planet. Let that sink in.

Plastic bottles not only pose a threat to our planet, but they also affect the health of humans, too. In a 2018 study, 93% of samples from popular bottled water brands were found to contain microplastics, which pollute our oceans and contaminate ocean life—some of which could be potentially consumed by humans. This a complex issue that affects us all. So what now?

To help create a solution, S’well and Parley for the Oceans have come together with a common goal: to minimize and eventually stop single-use plastic bottle consumption around the world. This new alliance will implement and build on the principles of the Parley AIR (Avoid. Intercept. Redesign.) Strategy, an approach developed by Parley to end marine plastic pollution and drive a material revolution.

To launch the partnership, and commemorate World Oceans Day, S’well and Parley have collaborated to create a limited-edition collection of S’well bottles. A portion of each bottle sold will fund the removal of 10 pounds of marine plastic waste through the Parley Global Cleanup network. More specifically, operations will focus on Small Islands Development States (SIDS), a group of small island countries that are especially threatened by a changing ocean and climate, yet also uniquely positioned to lead solutions.

The purchase of a S’well x Parley bottle also signifies taking the S’well Million Bottle Project Pledge to help displace 100 million bottles by 2020. But it doesn’t stop there. This ongoing collaboration will feature limited-edition S’well bottles with original designs from sought-after artists, photographers, and musicians to help redesign the ways we consume water around the world.
