The Secret to S’well Travels

Here at S’well HQ, we love to travel. Whether it’s a weekend road trip to the local watering hole or a month-long voyage across Europe, there are always new places to see and people to meet. While it does require a considerable amount of planning, traveling doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are a few of our go-to tips and tricks to make the most of your trip.

1. Book smart. Travel sites are notorious for tracking how you interact with their websites. Enable private browsing when searching for flights or reservations to ensure they don’t raise prices every time you revisit.

2. Have backup. Make digital scans of all important documents (ID, passport, visa, itinerary, contact information, etc.) ahead of time incase they are stolen or you lose them. You might also consider investing in a portable phone charger. You never know when you might need a little extra juice for that iPhone 6.

3. Call ahead. Let your debit and credit card company know that you will be traveling ahead of time as to avoid any problems with foreign or suspicious charges.

4. Find the right bag. We’re partial to these new Away rolling suitcases that offer “first class luggage at a coach price.” They’re sleek, stylish, and even come with a built-in USB charging port.

5. Pack light. Remember that layering is key. Think about your outfits ahead of time to figure out the best ways to mix and match. Store your liquids in smaller containers to conserve space and weight. Check out Muji for a great selection of travel accessories.

6. Don’t forget the essentials. A good camera, a comfortable pair of shoes, and of course, a S’well Bottle are all major key when it comes to traveling. Our Seafoam and Tahoe Dusk bottles are perfect for any type of summer destination.

7. Make space. When it comes time to pack, roll all of your clothes for the most efficient use of luggage space. If you’re using a bag with wheels, pack with the heaviest items at the base. This will make maneuvering the bag a lot easier.

8. BYOB. Regardless of how you’re planning on getting to your destination, it’s always a good idea to provide your own drinks. S’well Bottle is the perfect accessory for staying hydrated throughout the flight or sneaking wine onto the train.

9. Consider bathroom breaks. If you’re on a road trip, plan pit-stops along the way so you don’t find yourself in a pickle. This is even more important at airports, where flights are time sensitive and security lines are long.

10. Check the reviews. When planning for your trip, utilize resources like Trip Advisor or Kayak to see what other travelers have to say about potential lodging options or activities.

11. Immerse yourself. For a more authentic experience, consider using a service like AirBnB. It’s a great way to connect with other travelers and get to know the locals.

Happy traveling, jet-setters. Share your S’well travels with us on social media by tagging @swellbottle or by using the hashtag #SwellBottle.

Poolside Playlist

Here at S’well HQ, we’ve been working for the weekend and now it’s finally time kick back and relax. In celebration of the 3-day break, we put together a Spotify playlist to accompany you and your S’well bottle poolside, beachside, or wherever else you might be this Memorial Day. Yes, we know there’s a lot of Drizzy included. But an office that loves Drake together, stays together. Enjoy!

Lime & Jalapeno Margarita

  • 1/2 cup fresh-squeezed lime juice1/2 large green jalapeño pepper, sliced thin
  • 4 ounces silver tequila
  • 2 ounces honey
  • 2 tablespoons sea salt

  2. Add tequila and honey. Stir or shake in bottle to combine thoroughly – or until all the honey is dissolved.
  3. Pour the sea salt in the bottom of a small bowl. Dip the top of each serving glass in the margarita mixture, let it drain off, then press the top of the glass into the bowl of salt. Gently tap the glass to knock off any excess.
  4. Fill each glass with fresh ice and pour in margarita mix.
  5. Garnish with the fresh lime & enjoy!

Earth Day

Here at S’well, we take Earth Day very seriously. Our mission, after all, is to rid the world of plastic waste. In honor of Earth Day and in an effort to leave this planet better than we found it, we wanted to extend a few tips and tricks to green out your work place according to the 3 R’s: reduce, reuse and recycle.

  • Probably one of the biggest and most effective ways to green out your office is to simply implement policies that discourage the use of unnecessary waste and encourage practices like reusing and recycling.
  • Go digital, because Google Docs is the new notebook. Avoid printing when you can and print double-sided when you can’t. Remember, there are plenty of digital tools out there that can help avoid situations that require excessive amounts of printed paper.
  • Turn it off. Conserve energy by turning off or unplugging any electronic devices that aren’t in use. Better yet, opt for natural light.

  • Invest in a killer water bottle and use it like it’s your job. Plastic bottles are bad for the environment, your health and your wallet. S’well Bottles are the perfect accessory to carry you from your morning caffeine fix, afternoon hydration, all the way into evening workouts. Pro tip: ask the barista at your local coffee shop to fill your bottle up directly with coffee. You’ll spare the cup AND your coffee is guaranteed to stay hot for at least 12 hours.
  • Break out the reusable containers. If you don’t already do so, consider bringing your lunch to work over getting takeout. Homemade lunches typically save money and calories. But don’t skimp on your food storage. We’re partial to a cool lunchbox or glass tupperware
  • BYOB – bring your own bag. Reusable bags are all the rage, nowadays. You can use them to run errands, pick up groceries or carry some extra stuff home from the office. The company Baggu has recently taken New York by storm. Their standard bag comes in a variety of colors and can be easily packed into a purse or briefcase.

  • Do your part. Help out where you can by recycling what you can. Plastic, paper, glass, batteries, printer cartridges, old electronics & more can all be recycled.
  • Arrange for disposal. Figure out what the best way of collecting and disposing of the recyclable materials is. Sometimes this can be arranged by the building management. Depending on the size of your company, you might also consider hiring an outside service.
  • Enforce it. The most important step of your green efforts is to make sure that everyone holds up their end of the deal. Always reiterate the cardinal rule: reduce unnecessary waste, reuse what you can & recycle what you can’t.

You can take the 3 R’s a step further by encouraging other methods of going green. Add plants to your office space to brighten up the area and filter the air. Commute smarter by walking, biking, carpooling or taking public transport to work. If you’re really committed, you can order custom S’well bottles for your company. We aim to align ourselves with similar brands that will echo our mission and message.

Coachella & How to Bring Your Fest Best

It’s about the time of year again…That’s right, folks – it’s festival season! We’re gearing up for all the season’s best events, including New York’s own Gov Ball and Panorama NYC, classics like Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, plus more from the likes of Sweetlife, Firefly and even Glastonbury across the pond. And how could we forget Coachella?

Arguably one of the biggest music festivals in the US, Coachella is held over 2 weekends (April 15-17 and April 22-24). With headliners like LCD Soundsystem, Guns N’ Roses, Calvin Harris, A$AP Rocky, the 1975 and more, there’s plenty to do and eat. But like all music festivals, Coachella can be exhausting so you’ve got to come prepared.

First things first: hydration is key. It’s inevitably going to be hot and you’ll probably be drinking, so it’s imperative to bring a water bottle. On behalf of the planet, you should bring a reusable bottle. On behalf of your own well-being, you should bring an insulated bottle to keep your liquids cold. Lucky for you, S’well bottles take care of both. Plus, the 9oz S’well is the perfect size for toting around. If you’re planning on bringing your fest best, we recommend the Galaxy Collection. The iridescent finish of these bottles bring just the right vibe.

Other festival essentials include a portable phone charger, small bag or fanny pack, reliable pair of sunnies, layers (especially at Coachella, where the temp can quickly drop at sundown) and a comfortable pair of shoes.

Don’t forget to catch us at Coachella this weekend on Snapchat or Twitter. Stay tuned to see how it goes. Happy festing, everyone! Stay cool.

National Beer Day

Here at S’well, we’d be lying if we said we didn’t fill our bottles with a cold beer every once and awhile. After all, our bottles are the perfect solution for keeping beer at just the right temperature and carbonated. And boy, do we enjoy an ice cold brewskie on a sunny Spring day. In celebration of National Beer Day, we took the liberty of compiling a list of our favorite beer gardens & breweries in the city. Prost!

Radegast Hall and Biergarten

In case you didn’t know, Radegast is all the rage. And why wouldn’t it be? Located in Williamsburg with a retractable roof and plenty of communal tables, it’s safe to assume that this beloved beer hall is always packed. The venue offers everything you’d expect and more: 22 beers on tap, 50+ bottled beers from around the world, sausage, and pretzels with their infamous beer cheese. Tables are on a first come, first served basis so be sure to get there early to grab a seat and enjoy some live jazz.

Standard Biergarten

Located under the highline in the Meatpacking District, the Standard Biergarten is one of New York’s trendiest beer halls. Needless to say, this is a place to see and be seen – day or night. Typically glass-enclosed during the winter months, the space transforms into an open-air patio during the warmer Spring and Summer months. Cash in for beer tickets to get a glass as big as your head before you hit the ping pong tables. Bonus: the bartenders are dressed in mock lederhosen.

Brooklyn Brewery Tasting Room

Ever since its founding in 1988, Brooklyn Brewery has been charged with making some of the best beer in NYC. In addition to actually producing their own beer, the brewery also offers tastings and tours of their facility throughout the week. Weekends are the best times to hit this must-try spot. But remember to come early, as lines typically start forming an hour before the doors open. Learn more about tours and tasting hours here.

Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden

As the oldest and one of the largest beer gardens in New York, Bohemian Hall continues to be one of the city’s best spots. Located in Astoria, the garden offers endless rows of picnic tables beneath canopied trees for all your socializing pleasures. There’s plenty of variety of both domestic and European brews, all offered at $6 pints and $16 pitchers.

Last but not least, Spritzenhaus. Another sprawling Brooklyn beer hall located just off of McCarren park. With over 100 beers on tap and a varied menu with endless sauce choices, Spritzenhaus is a must. At 6,000 square feet, the building offers a variety of amenities including a wood-burning fireplace for the cold, open windows for when it’s warm and swanky bathroom sinks with a pedal push feature.

SXSW in Review

Last week, the S’well team was in Austin, Texas for the SXSW Film, Music & Interactive Media Festival. There was plenty to do, plenty to eat & plenty of cool people to meet. Here’s a quick run-through of how the week went down.

You wouldn’t be doing Austin right if you didn’t start the mornings with breakfast tacos. Our favorite taco joints include Torchy’s Tacos (Obama himself patroned the cherished taco spot during his visit to ATX), Veracruz All Natural food truck and Tacodeli.

Throughout the week, various companies and brands hosted activations at different houses (this is just a cool way of saying they hosted parties at different venues). S’well partnered with Funny or Die for a Sunday showcase concert featuring Penguin Prison at the #FODTX SXSW House at the Scoot Inn.

Some of our other favorite houses included Refinery29 x Neiman Marcus, Tumblr, Headgun featuring Jake & Amir, Mashable, Revolve x Who What Wear, Infatuation x Paige Denim, and Spotify.

In addition to working with Funny or Die, S’well also partnered with Universal Music Group to green out the JW Marriott for the “MUSIC IS UNIVERSAL” experience. The event included rooftop yoga with GAP, concerts with Ryan Adams and The Avett Brothers, and a poolside DJ night with a live mural painting experience by artist Yoon Hyup. In case you missed it, S’well collaborated with Yoon Hyup to create our Austin Nights bottle (it sold out within a few days), featuring an outline of the Austin skyline.

Our favorite places for #EEEEEATS included the very instagrammable Launderette & Josephine House, Hopdoddy Burger Bar (a more in depth ode to Shake Shack), Juiceland (for fresh smoothies to help get over those ATX hangovers), East Side King Thai-Kun (food truck at Whisler’s Cocktail bar), and Foreign & Domestic (a great BBQ pit off the beaten path). All of the food trucks, although more of a slow sit down pace, were insanely good.

Despite the heat, we had an amazing time and met a lot of cool people along the way (shoutout to our new friends BØRNS & Cloves). All of this and more was covered on our Snapchat story. Stay in the loop by following us for more behind the scenes looks at the S’well life… and stay weird Austin.

Sarah Kauss on the Water Crisis

By Sarah Kauss, Founder & CEO of S’wellblog_unicef_content

Clean water. Without a second thought, we simply turn the knob and it comes flowing out of the faucet. But the accessibility to clean water that is so customary to us is a luxury that people around the world do not have.

I have always been very passionate about the environment and educating people to use less plastic. It is part of what fueled my desire to create a reusable water bottle, which later turned into S’well. But when I attended my 5-year MBA reunion at Harvard and attended a presentation about the water crisis, I learned how many people in the world do not have access to clean drinking water. I immediately knew that the water crisis was something that could be somehow addressed by my idea to create a better water bottle.

In came the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. The organization supports UNICEF‘s work, and other efforts in support of the world’s children, through fundraising, advocacy and education in the United States. For the second year in a row, S’well is so proud to be part of their work by donating $100,000 to help provide clean water to the world’s most vulnerable children.

Did you know that with just $1, UNICEF can provide one child safe drinking water for a month? This World Water Day, S’well is proud to once again support the UNICEF Tap Project. The Project is a nationwide campaign that provides clean water and adequate sanitation to children around the world. UNICEF works in more than 100 countries around the world to improve access to safe water and sanitation facilities in schools and communities and to promote safe hygiene practices.

Simply open uniceftapproject.org on your phone. For every five minutes you go without touching your phone (that’s right, no texting, calling, emailing, tweeting, instagramming, posting, etc) sponsors and donors will fund one day of clean water for a child in need. It’s that easy. So challenge yourself, your family, your friends, your coworkers to disconnect and make a difference.

World Water Day is on Tuesday, March 22. On that day, when you shop on swellbottle.com, S’well will donate 20% of your purchase to the U.S. fund for UNICEF in support of the UNICEF Tap Project. To find out more visit www.uniceftapproject.org.

*UNICEF does not endorse any brand or product. None of the purchase price is tax deductible
