The Facts about Clean Water
The situation
  • Nearly 800 million people in the world do not have access to safe, clean water – that's roughly one in 10 people around the world. (World Health Organization (WHO)/UNICEF)
  • 700,000 children die every year as a result of diseases caused by unclean water and poor sanitation. This amounts to around 2,000 deaths a day. (WHO).
  • Children in poor environments often carry 1,000 parasitic worms in their bodies at a time. (UNICEF)
  • In urban areas in Africa and Asia people collect water from polluted waterways or pay high prices to buy it from vendors who obtain it from dubious sources.
  • Millions of women and children spend several hours a day collecting water from distant, often polluted sources.
How WaterAid is helping:
  • WaterAid has reached nearly 16 million people with safe water since 1981 and over 11 million people with sanitation since 2004.
  • WaterAid projects providing safe water, sanitation and hygiene education cost just $25 per person. (WaterAid)
  • Last year WaterAid reached 1.45 million people with safe water and 1.62 million people with sanitation.

The Facts about Plastic Waste
The situation
  • Even in this era of conservation of resources, less than 20% of plastic disposable water bottles are recycled.
  • An estimated 50 billion plastic bottles of water are consumed each year in the US and over 200 billion bottles globally.
  • The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a floating mass of garbage, roughly the size of Canada, in the Pacific Ocean — and it’s largely made of plastic waste.
  • 1.5 million barrels of oil are used annually to produce plastic water bottles for the US alone — enough to fuel 100,000 cars for a year.
  • Imagine a water bottle filled a quarter of the way up with oil. That's about how much oil was needed to produce the bottle.
